KC INDIAN MART THIS WEEKEND The 2009 Kansas City Indian Art Market & Cultural Festival is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, and Sunday, Oct. 4, at Line Creek Community Center, 5940 NW Waukomis Drive, Kansas City, Mo. Native American artists will display art work, jewelry, pottery, leatherwork and more for shopping and browsing. Visitors can sample Indian cuisine such as Indian tacos, fry bread and nachos. Entertainment features Native American Indian Dancers; Dennis Rogers, dancer, drummer and storyteller; and flutist Terry Lee Whetstone. Educational classes and displays will be offered inside the community center. Indian Fest is sponsored by Kansas City, Mo., Parks and Recreation, the Neighborhood tourist Development Fund, and the National Center for Indigenous American Cultures. Admission is $2; children 12 and younger are free. Parking is free. SEARCH COMMITTEE ANNOUNCED Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has named seven advisers to help in the search for a successor to Linda Martinez, who recently resigned as the state economic development director. Area advisors appointed to the search committee include Pete Levi, Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce president; and Clyde McQueen, Full Employment Council of Kansas City president and CEO.
SPRINT CENTER WINS AWARDS The American Council of Engineering Companies/Missouri awarded Sprint Center the 2009 Grand Conceptor award, the highest award given by the organization in its annual Engineering Excellence awards program. In addition, the structure received recognition in the national Engineering Excellence Awards competition. “Sprint Center is proud to receive continued recognition for both design excellence and attendance projections,” said Brenda Tinnen, senior vice president and general manager of Sprint Center/AEG Kansas City. “Achieving this recognition is indicative of both our iconic facility and Kansas City’s unbridled enthusiasm for live entertainment.” The city’s Capital Improvements Management Office managed the design and construction of Sprint Center. Structural engineering company Walter P Moore nominated the project for the Engineering Excellence Awards competition on behalf of themselves and the city. “We are extremely proud that the Sprint Center has received this recognition,” Capital Improvements Management Office acting director Ralph Davis said. “The artistic vision and state-of-the-art engineering put to use in the Sprint Center’s design and construction produced a world-class asset.” Sprint Center, the newest landmark and centerpiece for downtown revitalization, is a 18,500-seat, multipurpose arena that hosted 130 events and 1.3 million guests in its first year.
