Winchester to speak at UMKC Best-selling author Simon Winchester will discuss his works including “The Man Who Loved China,” a biography of Cambridge scientist Joseph Needham at the 43rd annual Carolyn Benton Cockefair Continuing Education Series, hosted by the University of Missouri- Kansas City. Winchester’s presentation will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 22 in the University Center’s Pierson Auditorium, 5000 Rockhill Rd., Kansas City, Mo. Tickets are not required. RSVPs are requested. Call 235-6060 to reserve a seat. Carolyn Benton Cockefair was an instructor at UMKC who believed everyone should continue their learning. The education series was created by her former students.
The Honeywell Women’s Network recently donated back-to-school supplies to Center Middle School. Two representitives from Honeywell brought 50 backpacks, 50 flash drives, miscellaneous supplies and $1,600 for students at the school. The money will be used to buy other school supplies for students in need or for shoes for those who truly need them, principal Linda Williams said.
Andrew H. Card Jr., former White House chief of staff to President George W. Bush, will speak about “Ethical Leadership - Challenges and Choices” at 7:30 p.m. in the Rockhurst University Convocation Center, 54th Street and Troost Avenue. Card will discuss how he leveraged strategy and negotiation skills to orchestrate domestic, foreign, security and anti-terrorism policies. The program, part of the Visiting Scholar Lecture Series, is free and open to the public. To register, call 501-4828.
